This project formed part of Block Architects commissions from North Lanarkshire Council Local Authority.

The Brief

The building originally known as Carnegie Public Library is a Grade B Listed Building. We were approached to assist with the overhaul and replacement of the slate roof, associated leadworks, and glazed rooflight replacements. The external stone facades required some repair works and stone replacements and generally, the programme was to ensure that the library was made watertight.

Our Solutions

The main traditional Scottish Slate was removed alongside the traditional horsehair underlay to be replaced with a modern breathable roofing membrane. Existing lead gutters were renewed and new comparable slate tiles were replaced. The cupola was overhauled with rot repairs, repainting, and cleaning of the roof surfaces.

Stone repairs included sensitive Doff Cleaning with concrete infill mortar being removed and replaced with traditional lime mortar.

Rotten glazed skylights were also removed and replaced with modern grey aluminium double glazed units.

A combination of efforts from a great team ensured the future longevity of a great Listed Building.
