Case Study: Colzium House – Where Heritage Meets a New Chapter

A heritage-led transformation of Colzium House – preserving architectural significance while reimagining it as a vibrant, accessible venue for weddings, events, and community use across North Lanarkshire.

The Overview

Colzium House sits at the heart of the Colzium Lennox Estate in Kilsyth – a location woven into the cultural and social fabric of North Lanarkshire. With roots stretching back to 1783 and extended during the Victorian era, the house is a rare surviving example of evolving Scottish country house architecture. Despite partial demolition in the mid-20th century, the remaining structure continues to make a bold architectural and community statement.

Now serving as a wedding venue and heritage museum within a wider public park, the estate features mature gardens, a 15th-century castle ruin, a historic ice house, and ornamental grounds. With growing visitor demand and a need to modernise, North Lanarkshire Council appointed Block Architects to lead a sensitive, phased refurbishment – reimagining the house as a fully accessible, elegant, and fit-for-purpose public venue for generations to come.

The Brief

We were appointed to develop a long-term vision for Colzium House that balances three key outcomes:

  • Preservation of historic character and fabric
  • Adaptation for modern-day events and community use
  • Phased delivery to minimise disruption to ongoing public activities.

Working in close partnership with North Lanarkshire Council and Historic Environment Scotland, we’ve developed a robust proposal that carefully considers the building’s heritage value while unlocking new potential.

The project has now received approval and will move forward in carefully managed stages.

Our Approach: Sympathetic, Strategic, Future-Focused

Our design philosophy at Block Architects is grounded in context and legacy. At Colzium House, this means working with – not against – the grain of history. The interiors strategy, led by our Architecture, Interiors, and Studio teams, adopts a “sympathetic authenticity” approach, where traditional details are honoured and modern needs are met with restraint and precision.

Key themes of our proposal include:

1. Restoration of Key Features
Surviving heritage elements – including fireplaces, cornicing, timber panelling and decorative joinery – will be retained and restored wherever possible. Where features have been lost, our team has proposed sensitive reinstatement based on archival research and site analysis.

2. A Refined Material & Colour Palette
The interiors will draw inspiration from 19th-century country house schemes: deep greens, soft ochres, and warm natural tones paired with period-appropriate materials such as hardwoods, lime plasters and wool fabrics. Every choice made is about respecting the spirit of place.

3. Modern Comforts, Subtly Introduced
Contemporary needs – including discreet heating, AV, and lighting – will be integrated with care to avoid compromising the historic feel. Lighting, for example, will feature a blend of antique-style fittings and hidden LEDs to create a layered, atmospheric result.

4. Accessibility Without Compromise
Subtle interventions such as gently sloped thresholds, accessible restrooms, and a platform lift have been designed into the proposal – ensuring the venue meets current standards without disturbing the visual rhythm or flow of the building.

5. Phased Delivery Strategy
Given the estate’s ongoing use for weddings and public events, works are planned in phases to:
• Prioritise urgent fabric upgrades.
• Maintain public access and revenue generation.
• Align with funding availability.
• Build momentum with minimal operational disruption.

Visualising the Future

Our in-house Studio team played a key role in the early stages of stakeholder engagement – producing detailed 3D visualisations and immersive walkthroughs that brought our design intent to life.

These visuals were instrumental in aligning aspirations across client teams, conservation bodies, and community stakeholders – and will continue to guide delivery as the project progresses.

Looking Ahead

While this is just the beginning of the journey for Colzium House, the work already undertaken reflects the kind of project we’re passionate about: one that respects history, adds community value, and creates spaces that feel both timeless and welcoming.

As the project moves towards site delivery, our team is proud to be supporting North Lanarkshire Council in revitalising one of the area’s most treasured landmarks – ensuring it not only stands the test of time, but serves as a meaningful venue for the future.
